Making New Impressions

Unlocking the Archive, the team of academics based at the Heritage Centre in the Forum Library Norwich, were interested in ideas of how they could engage new audiences for their renaissance books collection.

Their design consultancy, Darren Leader Studio, suggested a graphic design event to celebrate these books by holding an exhibition of responses from selected Norwich designers.

Tom and Sophie at Unlocking the Archive suggested a great title for the project, ‘New Impressions: redesigning Norwich’s renaissance books’. The brief was distributed at the workshops and talks held to introduce the designers both to the book collection and the renaissance world.

Honoured to be among the invited designers, we responded with a poster design inspired by the innovative grid layout of Nicholas de Lyra's biblical commentary from 1491.

Our work, along with that of our fellow participating designers, was displayed next to the books that inspired it at the Being Human Festival in the Forum Library in late November 2017. Attendance for the exhibition far exceeded expectations and this has set everyone up for the larger, follow on exhibition in early 2018 at the Crypt Gallery in Norwich Cathedral.
